It gives you accurate results whether you’re looking for a wood-burning sauna stove or an electric sauna heater. This difference matters, as sauna stoves are sized by sauna volume in cubic feet (ft³), while electric sauna heaters are sized by their heating capacity in kilowatts (kW).
How to Use the Calculator
1. Enter your dimensions in whole inches.
We use inches because they’re the standard way sauna manufacturers list detailed product dimensions. Simply enter the measurements shown in the manufacturer’s specifications: no need for conversions from feet or decimals.
2. Complete all five measurements and select your insulation level. This gives you an instant result, both for a wood sauna stove in cubic feet and an electric sauna heater in kW.
If your sauna room has no glass surfaces, simply enter 0 for both glass width and glass height.
- Glass is less insulating than wood, which means that the more glass surfaces your sauna has, the more effective your sauna heater has to be.
- Insulation is typically poor/non-existent in saunas in North America, but if your sauna happens to have better insulation (it’s a cabin sauna made of thick logs, has fiberglass-filled walls, or it’s an indoor sauna, for instance), our calculator allows you to easily switch between insulation levels, seeing the effect it has without losing the dimensions you already gave.
What to Do with the Results
The biggest mistake is underpowering, since a heater too small will take longer to reach the desired temperature, and it won’t serve you as long as it could because it’s constantly running on maximum capacity. This is taxing on the heater and reduces its lifespan.
Overpowering is much less common and a lesser problem, but still not a good idea. Even if excessive heat wasn’t an issue, your power bills would be higher for no good reason, or with a wood stove, the risk of a wall catching on fire could increase.

We manually collected real data from the best sauna heater brands (Harvia, Narvi, Helo, IKI, Kastor, and Misa) for this chart. It demonstrates several things:
- The kilowatts of wood stoves and electric heaters never match, even for spaces of exact sizes, because the kW value used for wood sauna stoves is nominal kW (also called thermal output), whereas with electric sauna heaters it’s standard electrical wattage (kW).
- This distinction is still helpful: let’s say your sauna room is bigger than average and requires a 15–20 kW sauna heater, and you were hoping to get an electric one. Unfortunately in North America, it’s not possible to get that size electric heater for a residential sauna due to electrical constraints. This limitation means your sauna needs a wood-burning sauna stove. They’re more powerful and go up to 50 kW.
(A little bit of trivia: In Finland, you can get an electric sauna heater of up to 36 kW (!), our compiled data looking like this:
- 390–880 ft³ → 12–16 kW
- 705–1,625 ft³ → 18–26 kW
- 1,235–2,650 ft³ → 36 kW
But even in Finland, these sizes are mostly for communal saunas, so much less will still be more than plenty for most US home settings.)
- With electric sauna heaters, a good rule of thumb is that 4.5 kW is ideal for a 2-person sauna, 6 kW for a 3-person sauna, and 8 kW for a 4-person sauna.
- Concerning wood sauna stoves, the ranges can feel ridiculously wide: if the sauna heater size calculator gave you a result such as 1,200 cubic feet, you could technically get any stove between 16 kW and 40 kW.
- That’s when you should start prioritizing your own stove preferences instead of looking at just nominal power. Whether you want endless löyly (steam) for hours, higher and/or drier heat, how quickly you want your sauna to heat up, etc. Stoves with more rocks always produce the best löyly for longest but also take longer to heat than stoves that hold fewer rocks.
- Regardless of which type of sauna heater you go for (wood or electric), choose the higher end of the range if your sauna has considerable glass area and/or poor insulation.
When Not to Trust Sauna Heater Size Calculators
There’s only one situation where no sauna calculator can give you an accurate result: you want a 1-person sauna.
They are so small that you could get an electric heater result such as 1.8 kW. No sauna manufacturers offer heaters that tiny, which means overpowering is your only option, while a wood-burning sauna stove is not a possibility at all; it would fill the entire sauna and leave you out.
1-person saunas are abominations that are not able to work the way saunas are intended and shouldn’t exist at all. They actually don’t in many countries, but in the US they do, as so many companies lead with dollar signs in their eyes, while integrity is secondary.
Even NO sauna is better than a 1-person sauna!
